Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (Digital University) was set up by Government of Kerala by upgrading the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala (IIITM-K)

Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (Digital University) was set up by Government of Kerala by upgrading the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala (IIITM-K), a Centre of Excellence in Information Technologies under Department of Electronics and Information Technology.

Government has decided to upgrade IIITM-K into a University and enhance its scope of its operation on all facets of digital world. Accordingly, the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovations and Technology has been established by Ordinance No.9 of 2020 promulgated by the Hon’ble Governor of Kerala with the IIITM-K as the sponsoring entity. The University formally started its operation on October 28, 2021 from the new campus of IIITM-K at Technocity, Mangalapuram, Thiruvananthapuram with the first Vice Chancellor Prof. Saji Gopinath, Professor of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. The University was officially inaugurated on February 20, 2021 by the Hon’ble Governor of Kerala in a function presided over by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala.

Vision and Mission

The vision of the University is to become a global destination of International repute in Digital Technology Education and Research and to become an academic leader by nurturing futuristic talent capable of developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the Industry, Governments and Society by leveraging on Digital Technologies, through education, research and application.  The motto of the University will be to Curate a responsible Digital World Development and application of Digital Technology for social good is the underlying mission of the University. Towards this, the University shall focus on four themes of action namely, Computing, Intelligence, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship; the first two themes shall form the focus area of work and the next two themes act as guiding light for the overall mission while designing programs, developing products and services as well as for providing training and extension activities. The university shall catalyze technical advances that promote societal welfare.

Governance & Administration

By virtue of Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology Ordinance, the Hon’ble Governor of Kerala is the Chancellor and the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. The General Council and Board of Governors are the Principal Governing Bodies. Dr. Vijay Chandru, Co-founder & Chairman Strand Life Sciences & Professor, Indian Institute of Science has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Board of Governors. The Vice Chancellor is the Executive Head of the University. He will be assisted by the Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Deans etc.

Current Status of the University

Based on the Ordinance, University Grants Commission has given approval for the University under Section 2(f) of UGC Act. University has also received recognition of the AICTE.

(a) Academic Activities

University envisages Five schools of study namely,

  • School of Computer Science and Engineering
  • School of Digital Sciences
  • School of Informatics
  • School of Electronics Systems and Automation
  • School of Digital Humanities and Liberal Arts

The programs planned to offer include Ph.D, M.Sc., MTech, Integrated MTech. and MSc, PG Diploma programs etc.  MTech programs,  MSc programs and Ph. D programs will be offered during the current year with a total intake of 400 students.

Other academic activities
  1. A certificate program on Governance for leaders of local self-government institutions was launched along with Sree Narayana Guru Open University and KILA. Another three certificate programs were conducted online with participants from different parts of the world
  2. Constituted various Boards of Studies for the four schools with eminent academicians from India and abroad
  3. Curriculum/Course and Syllabus for the MTech,  MSc and Ph. D programs got approved by the Board of Studies of the respective school.
  4. The Ph. D program of the University was announced and entrance examination for the admission of Ph D was conducted online. More than 350 candidates attended the test.
  5. Activity chairs like Placement Cell, Centres for Product Development, International Relation External Relations etc. have been set up
  6. Steps have been taken to announce the M Tech and MSc courses for the University and the classes will commence in October 2021
Developmental Activities

One of the key focus of the University is to play a significant leadership role in the digital transformation of various sections of society. Accordingly, the University has initiated several projects in the field of digital technology enablement. The summary of major projects is given below.

University is playing a significant role in the Government of Kerala’s new visionary project on Knowledge Economy. University has developed Digital Workforce management Platform for enabling employment to 2 million educated youth in the next five years

  1. University is associating with Hon’ble High Court on a model project on complete digital transformation of Justice System in Kerala
  2. University is collaborating with State Higher Education Council on a project on digital enablement of Higher Education Institutions
  3. University has collaborated with Sree Narayana Guru Open University and KILA to develop a unique program on Local Body Governance for members of various local bodies. This program launched officially by Hon’ble Chief Minister in March 2021 is expected to begin sessions from August and over 7000 members from various LSGs will be attending this program
  4. University is associating with State Election Commission to explore the possibility of digital transformation of the entire election system
  5. University has been engaged by KSRTC for complete digital transformation of its services
  6. University has been engaged by GST Commissioner for providing big data analytics and data intelligence support on GST related data.
  7. University is establishing a Centre of Excellence in IOT sensors in collaboration with CMET Trissur and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Govt. of India. The formal approval is expected soon.
  8. Two faculty members of the University has been awarded research projects under Cyber security and Cyber security of Cyber Physical Systems (C3iHub) project of Government of India with a combined grant of Rs 75 Lakhs.
  9. Kerala Block Chain Academy, a Research Centre under the University has launched a new program in Blockchain technology for startups and entrepreneurs in collaboration with EDII, Ahmedabad
  10. During the last 8 months, faculty members associated with the University published 25 papers in reputed international journals, contributed 11 books/book chapters and filed two patents during this time. One Patent has been awarded to Prof. Jaisanker R Nair , Professor of this University
  11. University organized 16 conferences/ seminars and other academic events during this time while the faculty members presented their papers in another 9 international conferences in addition to this
  12. Faculty members submitted 23 research projects worth Rs 5915 Lakhs for funding from external research funding agencies. This includes setting up of a Centre of Excellence in IOT Sensors in association with CMET supported by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India.
  13. University is also executing 21 digital transformation/ entrepreneurship projects with a total funding of Rs 5417 lakhs of which Rs 1892 lakhs worth of projects were granted during last 8 months.
